The central library now stays open until midnight

Since September, the central library has kept its reading rooms open until midnight from Monday to Friday. Staff leave at 8 pm; after that, visitors get in with their library card.

How the open library works

After the staff leave, the main entrance opens with a library card, cameras watch the entrance only, and a security guard walks through the building twice an hour. Books can be borrowed and returned at the self-service machines.

Who comes at night

In the first six weeks, an average of 140 people a night used the late hours. Most are students and apprentices, but the library also counts shift workers and parents who come after their children are asleep.

What it costs

The longer hours cost 180,000 euros a year, mostly for security and energy. The city council approved a trial until the end of 2027 and will then decide on the basis of the visitor numbers.
