Heat days have tripled since the 1990s

We looked at 35 years of data from the weather station at the airport. The number of days above 30 °C has risen from an average of four to an average of thirteen a year.

The numbers

In the 1990s the station recorded 30 °C or more on four days in an average summer. In the 2000s it was six, in the 2010s nine and since 2020 thirteen. The hottest summer so far was 2022, with 21 heat days.

Why the centre is hotter still

The airport lies outside the city in open fields. A temporary station on Marktplatz measured night temperatures up to five degrees higher than at the airport in 2024, because stone and asphalt release the heat of the day.

What it means for health

Doctors at the city hospital count more admissions of older patients for dehydration and circulatory problems on heat days. The health office now opens four cool rooms in public buildings when the weather service issues a heat warning.
