How we report, check and correct
We publish what we can confirm from our own reporting or from at least two independent sources.
Opinion pieces are labelled as opinion. We do not publish sponsored articles.
Every article shows when it was published and when it was last updated.
When we get something wrong, we correct it in the article, say what changed and when, and list it on the corrections page.
Questions about our work
Another question? Write to the newsroom.
How do you choose topics?
The section editors plan each week together. Reader questions, local records and our own reporting decide most topics.
How do you check facts?
A second editor checks names, figures and quotes against the sources before an article goes online.
How do you correct mistakes?
We change the text, add a dated note at the end of the article and list the correction on its own page.
Do you use anonymous sources?
Only when a person would be at risk if named, and only after two editors agree. The article says why.
Do you publish sponsored articles?
No. Partnerships for events are named on the event page; they never touch the articles.
